Insect Control Service
Insect Description
See what our insect control service can help you remove the following infestations.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs feed on human blood while the person is sleeping. Any hotel, residence, or bed & breakfast can get bed bugs. If you have bed bugs, it doesn’t mean you have poor housekeeping (although poor housekeeping compounds the problem). Bed bugs are very hard to eradicate because you have to kill every single bug and every single egg. Otherwise the infestation will just come back.
Beetles
Beetles like colorful flowers and plants, especially those planted around the entrances of homes and businesses. Once in, these creatures will make meals out of carpet, clothing, furniture, linens and nearly any type of fabric—even synthetics.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants are among some of the more destructive pests. Normally, you see the ants when they are out foraging for food and water. But what you don't see is most of them are doing some construction work in your walls, window-frames, roof, or deck.
Size: 6 – 25 mm long. Colour: Mainly black. Sometimes red and black, solid red or brown.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are commonly found in buildings or homes as they prefer warm environments close to food & water. They usually remain hidden in cracks during the day and search for food at night. They can also spread many kinds of bacteria while travelling one location to another, mostly via food items.
Fleas
Is your dog or cat suffering from fleas? Besides causing painful, itchy bites and rashes, fleas can also carry and transmit diseases, like typhus and tapeworms. Don’t stress over how to get rid of fleas in your house or waste time reading DIY articles claiming they know how to get rid of fleas. We combine treatment with an insect growth regulator to kill off fleas in pets’ resting areas and elsewhere.
Flies
If you’re experiencing problems with flies, trying different chemicals can be dangerous and using fly strips leaves carcasses in full view. If left untreated, diseases such as E.Coli, Salmonella and Typhoid could affect the people living or working in your property. Contact us for the most effective long-term solution.
Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are tiny black flying insects. They eat and lay their eggs on rotting and overripe fruits, garbage and other organic materials. They’re attracted to sugary foods and will multiply quickly once they appear.
Hornets
Hornets are natural protectors, with a strong drive to keep their nests safe. This has led them into conflict as unwanted guests around homes- where they may sting if threatened or disturbed. When they build a nest on or around your property, it can make the enjoyment of that space difficult. Contact us for professional help.
Moths
While moths do not pose a health risk, they are a pest in homes. They lay eggs in dark and rarely disturbed areas where clothes or other textiles are stored. Their larvae can cause severe damage to clothes, fabrics, leather and carpets. The damage may continue for many weeks after moth caterpillars have hatched.
Pantry Bugs
The most common pantry pests are weevils, beetles and moths. They are usually found within cabinets or pantry food items. Regularly cleaning will typically prevent them from taking over your kitchen. Contact us if you need help with getting rid of them!
Pavement Ants
Pavement ants are small nuisance pests that are also known as sugar or picnic ants. They are often seen feeding on sugary spills or attacking tiny food crumbs. The ants you see inside are the same type of ants you may see making the tiny dirt mounds in sidewalks or pavement.
Size: 2.5 to 3 mm long. Colour: Darkish brown to black with lighter coloured legs.
Pharaoh Ants
A small ant species, pharaoh ants typically nest in warm, hard to reach areas such as a wall, kitchen splashboards, counter tops and in wall sockets.
Size: Workers are 2 mm long & Queens are 4 mm long. Colour: Yellow to light brown. Queens are a reddish colour.
Silverfish
Silverfish thrive in moist, humid environments. Believe it or not, they can live up to 8 years and reproduce frequently. This is why they can be a huge nuisance and over time they can contaminate pantry items or potentially cause damage to your household items.
Spiders
Spiders are horrifying pests for anyone living in Vancouver. They can seek refuge in homes and businesses. From cellar spiders to wolf spiders, our spider exterminators know what it takes to get rid of spiders and stop them from returning.
Termites
Termites are attracted to any wood. Any framing, landscaping and firewood are all appealing to them. They can enter your property through the smallest openings and eat cellulose material (eg. wood, plants, carpet, insulation, sheetrock paper, animal feces, fabric, & more).
Size: 6 to 20 mm. Colour: Can vary in colour from white to dark brown.
Wasps
Unlike our bee friends, wasps have become unwanted guests in and around homes all over the world. With a strong natural drive to protect their nests, wasps and hornets have become known for their painful and sometimes dangerous stings. Despite their amazing craftsmanship, when they build a nest on or around a home, it can limit a person’s ability to enjoy their property.

Are the treatments safe for my family and pets?
The pesticides we use are extremely safe for your family and pets. Prior to your treatment you can download any of our preparation sheets. These provide step-by-step instructions on how to prepare your home prior to your treatment. On top of that, our technicians will provide you with advice and recommendations. This will ensure the safety of your home and family from beginning to end.
How long should I stay out of the house after insect control?
If your home is treated with a spray insecticide, we recommend staying out of your house for 4 hours. However, anyone who has allergies, asthma, is pregnant, children under the age of 4 or anyone with respiratory problems should consult their family doctor for re-entry times.
Is there an odour after the treatment?
Most of our chemicals have no odour at all. However, certain insecticides may leave a slight odour. This smell will dissipate after a few hours.
However, when you return home and the smell is still present, ventile your home by opening a few windows.
Do I need to clean my home after insect treatment?
Fight the urge to do a deep clean of your home for at least a week after you receive an insect control treatment. Cleaning cabinets and other areas after a treatment is tempting. But this can cause the chemicals to be rubbed off prematurely. Which will then reduce the overall power of the treatment.
What is Integrated Pest Management or IPM?
Integrated Pest Management or IPM combines common-sense practices with years of pest control experience to recognize when which pests are most active and prevent them from entering the home before they become a problem. This practice is more effective, environmentally friendly, and safer for families and pets than traditional pest control methods.
Do tenants pay for insect control?
This is a tough question to answer. According to the BC Residential Tenancy Policy Guidelines:
“The Landlord is responsible for ensuring that rental units and property, or manufactured home sites and parks, meet “health, safety and housing standards” established by law, and are reasonably suitable for occupation given the nature and location of the property.” AND “The landlord is generally responsible for major projects, such as tree cutting, pruning and insect control.”
“The tenant must maintain “reasonable health, cleanliness and sanitary standards” throughout the rental unit or site, and property or park.”
In general, landlords are responsible for pest control unless they can show the infestation is a result of tenant behavior. If this is so, the tenant becomes responsible.

What kind of ants are in my house?
During the summer the most common ants are moisture, pavement and carpenter ants. All have wings and swarm. Carpenter ants are black and much larger than the other two types.
What can I do to prevent or eliminate ants?
The key to preventing ants from infesting is preventing entry into your home. Ants are constantly foraging for food and water to share with the members of their colony and may even take up residence in your home in wall voids or other hidden spaces if conducive conditions exist. Check out our blog for tips on pest-proofing your home!
Do ants bite or sting?
Most ants in our region do not bite or sting. Certain species do bite, like carpenter ants. Carpenter ants are likely to be found nesting in or near your residence.
Why do carpenter ants eat wood?
Contrary to popular belief, carpenter ants don’t eat wood! Instead, they build tunnels where they will nest! You may see a fine saw dust or frasse where they are tunneling.
How do you identify a pavement ant?
Looking closely, you might be able to see the grooves on the pavement ant’s head and thorax. They are approximately 1/8” long (the size of a piece of rice) and are dark brown or black. Pavement ants prefer to stay outdoors, especially beneath flagstone patios and sidewalks.
How do you get rid of ants?
The key to preventing ants from infesting is preventing entry into your home. We can follow the ants back to their colony and treating the colony directly. Ants are constantly foraging for food and water to share with the members of their colony and may even take up residence in your home in wall voids or other hidden spaces if conducive conditions exist. What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small insects that live off the blood of people and animals. They have flat, oval-shaped bodies that are usually brown, although they take on a reddish colour after they’ve fed.
How do you get bed bugs?
Bed bugs can enter your home through clothing, luggage, or second hand furniture. They are commonly picked up while travelling, when staying in hotels. They can also spread into nearby rooms or other apartments after they’ve settled into a home.
Where do bed bugs bite?
Bed bugs are mostly active at night and bite people while they are sleeping. They can bite anywhere where there is exposed skin, but recurring bites usually appear in the same general area.
How do bed bugs spread?
Bed bugs can spread through contaminated clothing, luggage, and furniture. They can also spread from one room or apartment to another. Bed bugs spread by crawling and are known to contaminate many rooms in a home. They can easily hide in books, in the back of pictures hanging on a wall, inside of fabric furniture, bedding and clothing.
How do you check for bed bugs?
If you suspect that you have a bed bug infestation, remove all your bedding and check for signs of the bugs such as shed skins or excrement. Peel back the fabric in your box spring and check the wood frame. You should also check nearby shelves, dressers, and any cracks in the walls. If you aren’t sure what to look for, contact Pestcheck Pest Control.
What are typical signs of bed bugs?
Signs of bed bugs include bites, small brown spots on bedding and small blood smears on sheets.
The most common place to find bed bug eggs is in the tucks and folds of the mattress and box spring. They also hide behind headboards, along baseboards, sofas and other soft furnishings.
How do you get rid of bed bugs?
Finally, the most important FAQ: bed bugs. If it turns out that you have a bed bug infestation, you should follow the following steps in order to properly get rid of them:
Wash all your bedding and affected clothing in hot water. Then dry them on your dryer’s highest setting. Any stuffed animals or other soft furnishings that cannot be washed should be placed in your dryer at the highest setting for 40 minutes.
Use a stiff brush to brush away any bugs or their eggs from the seams on your mattress. Vacuum your mattress and the surrounding area. Place your vacuum cleaner bag outside in your garbage can away from your house.
If you have any cracks in your walls where the bugs might be hiding, repair them with plaster to remove these potential hiding places.
Since bed bugs can live for up to a year without feeding, place an encasement over your mattress to keep the bugs from getting in or out.
Keep the area around your bed free of clutter.
Who is responsible when a bed bug infestation is discovered in a rental unit?
A question asked by landlords and tenants alike. Who is responsible for the treatment of the unit if a bed bug infestation is discovered? The simple answer is that the landlord or property manager is responsible for the treatment of the unit. However, the tenant is responsible for cooperating with the landlord’s efforts to manage the bed bug infestation – such as prepping the unit for treatment, washing and bagging clothing etc.
Are spiders venomous?
The answer is, it depends on the spider. In BC, the only venomous spider is the Black Widow. All other spiders are known not to be poisonous or don’t pose a danger to humans or pets.
Where do spiders live in my home?
Spiders typically show up in dark, out of the way places such as basements and attics. Some species are particularly drawn to moisture, while others seek out dry areas in your home.
How worried should I be about house spiders?
House spiders prey on insects and other small creatures. They are not bloodsuckers and have no reason to bite a human. While house spiders usually only bite when startled, their bites can cause a red mark, with irritation for a number of hours.
How do I keep spiders out of my home?
There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of spiders entering your home.
First, be sure that your home is thoroughly sealed. Check windows, doors, and other points of entry are caulked and weather-stripped. Next, check the exterior of your home for spider webs. If you find webs in your garage, on your porch or under your carport, use a vacuum to remove them.
Are daddy-longlegs posionous?
Daddy-Longlegs are one of the most poisonous spiders, but their fangs are too short to bite humans.
What are fruit flies attracted to?
Because fruit flies don’t have teeth, they rely on liquid to energize them. Their brains can sense fermented fruit from literal miles away. Which means they will always been drawn to sweet items found in nature.
Think about it: when you’re enjoying wine on a summer night, it’s only a matter of minutes before the fruit flies start buzzing around the rim of your glass, desperate for a sip. Believe it or not, fruit flies are actually attracted to the scent of vinegar. Fruit, vegetables, wine and fermented, decaying organic matter are the primary sources of nutrition for the fruit fly.
Where do fruit flies go after summer?
Winter weather doesn’t kill off fruit fly populations – after all, winter in many areas can be quite warm. Cold temperatures, however, will stunt the development of new generations of fruit flies.
Scientists have found that at 60°F, the lifespan of fruit flies decreases. When the temperatures fall below 53°F, these flies stop developing entirely.
Still, adult fruit flies have the ability to “overwinter” when conditions get too extreme for them. This allows a fruit fly population to survive frigid temperatures and start the next generation when favorable conditions return.
What are sliverfish?
They are silver, teardrop-shaped creatures that look more at home on an alien landscape than the floor of your bathroom floor! Silverfish can be found in moist, humid areas of your home including basements, attics, kitchens and bathrooms. They are a nocturnal insect.
Unfortunately, these pests do not hibernate and therefore can be a problem all year long.
Should I be worried if I see one sliverfish?
Silverfish prefer moist areas. The first place you’ll usually see them is on the bathroom floor. If you see one silverfish, there is a good chance there are hundreds living in your walls.
What do silverfish eat?
This is an insect that eats old photos, wallpaper, books, filed papers and even dandruff. They also get into food areas looking for sugar, grains, oats and cereal. Inside your home they can eat away at valuable paper products, cause mildew and ruin a good meal.
Why do I have silverfish?
When the water table rises, silverfish must come to the surface to avoid drowning. When they do, they sometimes find their way into homes. But the real reason you have silverfish is that they have found a way into your home. Often, a large silverfish problem is evidence of a water drainage issue. When water runs down your walls, instead of down your downspouts, it can cause the wood of your home to rot. If you’re seeing silverfish, check to make sure your gutter system has no obstructions or breaks and get any holes filled or repaired.
Are silverfish dangerous?
No, silverfish are not a dangerous pest. The problem with silverfish comes from the destruction they are capable of causing to personal belongings, making them a nuisance pest.
How do you get rid of sliverfish?
This is the big question, isn’t it? We wish we could give you a simple answer. Silverfish can climb up through your wall voids and hide in places that are hard to get to. Getting them out of a home requires an education in their habits and habitats.
If you need assistance removing silverfish and sealing your exterior walls, the team here at Pestcheck has the education and resources to get the job done right.
What's the difference between bees and wasps?
The main difference is that wasps feed protein, in the form of other insects – especially larvae, to their offspring. This is not the case with bees, they collect pollen and produce honey.
What's the difference between wasps and hornets?
It may surprise you to learn that hornets are actually wasps! Yes, you read that right. Hornets are a subset of wasps and are a breed of special wasps living in large, highly organized colonies.
The main difference between wasps and hornets is their size and coloring. On average, hornets are a lot larger than wasps and usually come in a black and white or brownish red coloring. Wasps appear in a variety of colors, depending on the species.
Where do wasps build nests?
It depends on the type of wasp, but most commonly they may be found hanging from structures such as a branch or fascia of a building, or they may be in the ground. Wasps may also nest in compost heaps.
How long do wasps live?
The queens hibernate over winter to emerge and establish new colonies the following year. You could estimate that a queen might live for as long as 12 months.
Worker wasps live 12 -22 days, and the males have slightly shorter lives.
What do wasps eat?
It is pretty difficult to give a generalized answer around the diet of wasps as this can vary between different species. Generally, the wasps found in your garden will feed on nectar, fruit, insects and sugar.
Did you know that paper wasps feed on carrion, which is found in dead flesh and often go hunting for deceased insects to feed on?
How do you treat a wasp sting?
Mild and moderate reactions to wasp stings can be treated with a few simple remedies. However, it is highly advised that if you are starting to show the signs of an allergic reaction to a wasp sting you visit your doctor immediately.
You can treat wasp stings by:
Cleaning the area with warm soapy water.
Ice the area to reduce the swelling.
Apply antiseptic cream or spray.
Take a painkiller or an antihistamine to help ease the pain and itchiness.
