Types of Flies in Canada

Canada is home to a variety of fly species, each adapted to different environmental niches. Common types include house flies, fruit flies, horse flies, and bluebottles. Seasonal pests like black flies and biting midges are prevalent, particularly in rural and wooded areas during warmer months. Each species has unique behaviors and impacts on human activity, making them a diverse and widespread group of pests across Canadian provinces.

Problems caused by Flies

Flies are notorious carriers of diseases due to their attraction to fecal matter and decaying organic substances, which they can transfer to human food and surfaces. They are known vectors of pathogens like E. coli, salmonella, and tuberculosis, posing significant health risks in residential and commercial settings. Their presence can lead to food contamination, spoilage, and the spread of disease, making fly control a critical concern for public health.

Appearance and identification

Flies are small, typically not exceeding 10 mm in length, with a body divided into three parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. They possess large compound eyes, a pair of antennae, and a mouth adapted for sucking or piercing. The thorax supports two wings and three pairs of legs. Their larvae, known as maggots, are legless, cream-colored, and worm-like, making them easily distinguishable from other insect larvae.

How worried should I be about Flies?

Flies pose significant health risks due to their potential to spread a wide array of diseases rapidly. In environments where hygiene is crucial, such as kitchens and hospitals, their control is essential. While individual flies are a nuisance, large infestations can lead to serious health issues, making proactive control and management strategies vital. In severe cases, professional pest control services are recommended to effectively eliminate and prevent fly infestations.

Why do I have Flies?

Flies are commonly attracted to environments with accessible food sources and breeding conditions, such as garbage, compost, and animal waste. Poor sanitation, uncovered food, and standing water can also attract flies and provide ideal conditions for laying eggs. Residential and commercial properties can become infested if these factors are not properly managed, especially during the warm months when flies are most active.

How can I prevent Flies?

Effective fly prevention requires maintaining cleanliness and reducing attractants. Secure garbage lids, clean up food spills immediately, and store food in sealed containers. Regularly clean drains and gutters to prevent standing water and organic decay, which are potential breeding grounds for flies. Installing screens on windows and doors and using fly traps or electric fly killers can also help keep fly populations under control.

Cluster flies enter your home through small cracks around door and frames or any unsealed openings. Start by filling in any cracks and crevices. Keep food or leftovers sealed in a container as flies are attracted to the smells of foods. Always remove standing water.

Cluster flies are attracted to light and warmth. During the day they will gather in numbers on sun-warmed, south facing walls. During cooler weather cluster flies will crawl into crevices, lofts and wall voids where they will stay dry for hibernation over winter.
Clean garbage cans thoroughly and frequently as this is the top attractor of flies in your home. Clean up your pet feces and waste in your yard. Flies love feces! Cleaning up after animals in your yard will go a long way to towards controlling flies.
Grow the following plants as flies are repelled by them.
  • Basil: It doesn’t require much work to maintain and can survive in any climate.
  • Bay Leaf: Grows great during the warmer months and can be brought indoors.
