Swimming Pool Water Bugs

No one wants water bugs in their pool. And there’s nothing quite so disheartening as going out for a swim only to discover a layer of dead flies floating on the surface of your pool.

There are two common types of water bugs that you’ll probably find in your pool, and rest assured—they are not roaches!

Water boatmen

Water boatmen are slim, oval bugs with oar-like back legs that they swim with. Their food sources are all the gross stuff you try to keep out of your pool like algae and mosquito larvae.

Back swimmers

These bugs swim on their backs (hence the name) and have longer legs than water boatmen, but they are still oar like. These usually skim the surface of the water in long strides and feed off of other insects, like water boatmen. Back swimmers, unlike water boatmen, will bite you if handled.

Here are some sure fire tips to keep your pool sparkling, clean and water bug free this summer:

  • Vacuum your pool
  • Keep your pool’s pH and alkaline levels balanced
  • Apply algaecide
  • Use a pool cover
  • Clean your pump
  • Replace your filters
  • Turn off the pool lights at night, as they can attract various summer insects

Like all animals, insects are attracted to water, but the pests you really need to be worried about are ants. These nefarious critters will burrow through the vinyl lining in order to get a drink of the good stuff. Unfortunately, in doing so they will cause borderline unrepairable damage to your pool structurally. Their drowned carcasses can and will overload your pool filter.

To avoid this headache, simply make use of normal home pest control service to keep these pests off your property all together, especially if you’re dealing with ants in other outdoor settings.

If you keep up this above ritual, we at Pestcheck know, you will have no problem diving into your own pool this summer, all while using environmentally friendly pest control methods.
