Silverfish in the Bathroom?
Unfortunately, you’ve got silverfish in the bathroom! They get their name for their likeness to fish. Drawn to moist areas, they have a silver metallic color like scales of a fish and move side to side replicating a fish’s tail through the water.
Silverfish females can deliver one to three eggs per day which are hidden in cracks throughout your home for protection. The life expectancy for most silverfish is about three years. They thrive in moist, humid environments. Due to their sensitivity to light, silverfish prefer dark undisturbed places. They prefer to hide or rest in tight cracks or crevices during the day. Their food preference is natural materials, fabrics, paper, wallpaper, magazines, envelopes and books made with glue.
Keep an eye out for feeding marks, although they may be irregular whether they are holes, notches along an edge, or surface etchings. Yellow stains, scales and/or feces (tiny black pepper-like pellets) may also be seen on infested materials.
Prevention Tips
- You don’t want to pour out a bowl of your favorite cereal just to find it’s swimming with these squirming insects. Seal dry goods like cereal, pasta, rice, quinoa, flour, sugar, and pet food in sturdy, airtight containers.
- Minimize or eliminate clutter and junk stored items. Store items in airtight hard plastic containers – NO CARDBOARD BOXES (their favourite meal)
- Silverfish thrive in moist, humid environments. Using a dehumidifier in damp basements can help eliminate the moist, humid environments where silverfish thrive. Then seal up leaky pipes and make sure the bathroom is well ventilated.
- Silverfish will enter your home to avoid extreme weather. Inspect and seal the entrances around windows and door frames, utility pipes and vents. Also, repair leaky pipes and drains. Eliminate or repair any moldy or wet wood.
